One Month

Our little friend here is now one whole month old (although he is 5 weeks)! We went to the doctors today and our little Calvin has definitely grown. He is 9 lbs and 15 oz (43%-ile) 21.25 inches (26%-ile) and he is in the 69%-ile for his 15 inch smart brain.

It has been a very busy month for us, and I can hardly believe that a month has gone by since we first welcomed him into this world. He is still rockin' the newborn clothes and diapers but is slowly filling out. Most people said don't go out and get newborn clothes since most babies are usually in newborn clothes for only two-three weeks; I guess that doesn't hold true for Calvin. Last week I had to go out and buy him some more newborn clothes because he is a spit up monster and we were doing laundry every other day.

Calvin is still on his little routine, sleep-eat-wake, repeat. He takes two short-ish (45-1 hr) naps in the morning, one long nap in the afternoon (2-2.5 hrs) and another short nap in the late evening. At 2 1/2  weeks we transitioned him into his own room for naps, and at 3 weeks he was in his own room for nights, too. The first night was a little rough, but now it's great! Both for us, and for him. Robert puts him down for bed at 10-10:30 and he usually (key word) does a long stretch till about 4 (6 whole hours! It's wonderful :) and then after I feed him he sleeps till about 7. I am hoping with every week or two we can make it so he will keep tacking on an hour to that long stretch.

He is always the happiest in the morning: smiling, kicking around and "coo-ing".  He smiles A LOT now when Robert and I hold him, it's pretty adorable. As the day progresses he prefers to be held and cuddled-cue the amazing Baby Bjorn. In the afternoon we usually go for a good hour walk (I still don't have the approval to run) in the Bjorn and he LOVES it. He also loves walks in his stroller and -surprisingly- tummy time. The kid loves laying on his stomach and looking up and around. He also loves the sound of running water and bath time-- until we have to start washing him. Robert will put Calvin's toes under the running water as he is filling up the bath and he always smiles and looks so relaxed. It's pretty cute.

Two Weeks

These pictures were taken when Calvin was 5 days old, but he is now almost three weeks old! I can hardly believe it. He went in for his two week appointment last week, weighing in at 8 lbs 2 oz and 19.75 inches in length. He still has 3 oz to catch up to his birth weight, but he has grown a quarter of an inch! He is in the 11th percentile for height and 42nd percentile for weight.

Calvin eats every 2.5-3 hrs pretty consistently, followed by some awake time and then down for a nap. He is staying awake and more alert for longer periods of time which has been a lot of fun. It took a few nights of hard work, but Robert feeds him and puts him down for bed at about 10-10:30 and does a long 4-5 hour stretch until about 3. I feed him and then he is out till about 6:30 or 7 and he is up for the day!

We had to give him a sponge bath for his first few baths and he HATED it, to say the least. He sure did sleep well those nights, though :). We gave him his first real bath on Sunday and he seemed to like it. He is pretty expressionless most of the time, but when he first wakes up he always does this cross-eyed frog face and it is my FAVORITE thing in the whole world.

The only time he cries is when he is hungry (he takes his food seriously) or when he is overly tired and can't get himself to sleep. We figured out that he needs to start going down for a nap about 10 minutes early and he goes down easy, but if we wait he can get pretty mad.

He is really strong. He started lifting up his neck when he was about 2 days old, and his grip is unreal. If he is laying on mine or Roberts chest during his "awake" time then he will lift his head up and just hold it there and stare at us for a good minute or two. We also have to swaddle him up pretty good or else he just breaks out of it and ends up hitting himself while he is sleeping and waking himself up. Swaddling is THE BEST.

We are pretty in love with this kid.

White Coat Weekend

This past week Robert started Medical School at UNR! Well, orientation began this past week but today was technically his first day of class. At the end of orientation week was the White Coat ceremony. It's this fancy ceremony that symbolizes the students dedication to medicine and the start of their journey to becoming a physician and pretty much the start to their new life.

My mom was here helping me with Calvin, and my dad flew up a few hours before the ceremony. My sister and brother in law also decided to surprise Robert, so they made the long desolate drive up to Reno from Vegas!

On Saturday we headed over to Lake Tahoe since Collette and Justin had never been. My mom somehow sweet talked us into a private residential beach at Incline Village. We spent the afternoon hanging out at the beach and watching Darwin go crazy in the water. It was a perfect weekend!

Also, my son is crazy strong. (I like to attribute it to my olympic weight lifting while I was pregnant). He started holding up his head and having almost full control of his neck at 2 days old!
